Why We Use Makaton at Serenity Coulsdon?

Intent:

At Serenity Coulsdon, we use Makaton to promote inclusive communication for all learners, especially those with speech, language, and communication needs. Our aim is to ensure every student can express themselves, understand others, and feel confident in their learning environment.

Implementation:

Makaton signs and symbols are embedded across the school day—in classrooms, assemblies, and shared spaces. Staff are trained to model signs consistently, and visual supports are used to reinforce understanding and participation.

Impact:

Using Makaton has improved communication, reduced frustration, and increased engagement among our students. It fosters a more inclusive, respectful, and supportive school culture where every voice is valued.
